I recently read about the idea of becoming a yes mom over at Momfessionals and I totally love it. I thought it would be much easier than it actually is. As a mom I find myself saying no a lot. I never really thought about how much I said no until I starting trying to apply the yes mom idea to my life.
I have decided that May is the new January. Don’t get me wrong… I love the thought of a new year, a fresh start. Something about the crisp new pages of a brightly colored, polka-dot calendar makes me super excited (weird, I know). I love the idea of making New Year resolutions and thinking about all the ways we can better ourselves. What I don’t like about January 1st is that I am bundled up and freezing as I look outside and all I see is dead grass, leafless trees, zero color, and nothing that gets me excited to change. (Other than that adorable new calendar I just opened!)
May is so fresh, so colorful, so vibrant. The month that makes you want to stop and smell the flowers!
Once May hits I am begging Jake (or whoever might be willing) to help me get the flower beds cleaned up so I can add some color.
Everyone is doing their spring cleaning and it is out with the old and in with the new. The sound of birds chirping, animals coming out of hibernation (like the Over the Hedge gang currently living under my patio deck…grrr), the smell of fresh cut grass, flowers blooming…it all screams FRESH!! Why isn’t this the time that we are starting fresh? Setting new goals for ourselves?
Rather than doing it when it is gloomy and cold I am doing it now. So here it is – my Spring resolutions…excited for a fresh start.
1. Losing weight
Let’s just go ahead and get it out of the way. Isn’t it an unwritten law that losing weight must be one of your New Year resolutions? Just so no laws are broken I am going to do better at eating healthy. (Unless someone gives me a warm chocolate chip cookie…I’m going to eat it…and maybe a few of its friends. Don’t judge)
2. Read more books
I love to read and once I start a good book I can’t put it down, especially if it is by Karen Kingsbury. If Jake sees me reading one of her books he will joke and say “see you in a few days!” It is so true. I am addicted. I somehow got away from reading and need to get back to it. My goal is to read at least 2 books a month for now. That number may increase but we will see how it goes.
3. Read more books to Jack
I absolutely love to hear Jack read me a story. As he turns the pages he usually says something along the lines of “one upon a time….(insert random story line here such as the bear attacked daddy and I wrestled him!)”. Each page starts with “one upon a time” in case you didn’t know. Jack is full of life and personality and he doesn’t like to sit still for long. Getting him to sit down to read an entire book with me is next to impossible so I gave up trying. After a few pages we are done. I don’t like that. So back to the story time wrestling we go.
4. Send more snail mail
I loved getting mail as a kid but then I became an adult and things that came in the mail were bills and junk. BLAH!! I don’t like either of them! Every night when we pull up to the mailbox Jack excitedly asks what came for him. He is excited to open whatever I get him. He “reads” it and then is done. He just loves the thought that someone sent him something to read when he got home from MiMi’s for the day. I still have that same excitement! I love seeing my name and address handwritten on a fun colored envelope with a real stamp on it. I can’t wait to open it. Because I love it so much it is my goal to send more snail mail in hopes that I might make whoever received it smile. So if you get a piece of snail mail from me do me a favor and savor the moment. :)
5. Be more of a yes mom
I will explain more about this on Saturday but I read about being a yes mom awhile back and I absolutely love the idea!
6. Spend less time on my phone
It is a bit lot ridiculous that I sometimes feel I cannot function without my phone. It is like I might die if I don’t see what someone puts on Facebook the second they hit post. I only get so many hours and minutes with Jack so I am purposefully putting my phone on the charger in the other room during part of the evening so I can concentrate more on him…even if that means we are wrestling to finish a story.
Well there you have it. My thoughts on May being the new January. What are your thoughts? What are some Spring resolutions you have set? I would love to hear about them!
I have no idea why but I have jumped on the bandwagon of blogging.. The hardest part was deciding a name for the blog. How do you sum up your thoughts in just a few words?? I finally decided on “all things J.”
My life is full of junk..the fun vintage kind and the not so glamorous kind. Out of all the junk in my life my most favorite things start with J…except I do not consider them junk. :)
First off there is my sexy hubster also known as Jake. He is the love of my life and has been ever since we served chicken together in high school. Who knew you could fall in love over mashed potatoes and chicken? (I think it was the hot rolls that did it but that’s just me!)
